This month’s Negroni from Hope & Sesame takes the classic Negroni and adds an even more complex yet refreshing, crisp and aromatic twist. 

Created by Andrew Ho, co-founder and co-owner of Hope & Sesame, this cocktail stands out with its balanced mix of citrus, cherry and rhubarb to make a light, bright and vibrant drink to lift the mood during the cold days of February.

Hope & Sesame, located in a quiet neighboUrhood in Guangzhou, has become one of the most respected bars in mainland China since opening in 2016. As the first speakeasy in southern China, it quickly earned a reputation for pushing the limits of cocktail-making with innovative techniques such as centrifugal clarification, sous vide infusions, slow cooking and rotary distillation.

Named 'The Best Bar in Mainland China' in 2024, Hope & Sesame continues to be a testing ground for creative drinks. Their Negroni fits right in with its bold flavours and fresh take on a classic cocktail, which highlights the bar’s innovative approach.


THE DRINK


The Hope & Sesame Negroni has a bold, citrus-forward flavour that hits with a refreshing, tangy punch. For this particular Negroni Society variant of his Negroni, Andrew combines our Asterley Original Aperitivo with Aperol and our Estate Sweet Vermouth with SCHOFIELD'S Dry Vermouth.

This leads to a lighter more uplifting Negroni in itself but then incorporates a combination of Tanqueray 10 Gin, rhubarb bitters and cherry bitters which provide a nice balance of aromas and flavours. Finally the sour mix enhances and lifts the cocktail, creating a drink that has a crisp finish and complex layers.

TO SERVE YOUR NEGRONI

  • Pop the pouch in the freezer for 40 minutes until nicely chilled.

  • Pour into an ice-filled tumbler or old-fashioned glass.

  • Garnish with a slice of grapefruit slipped into the glass

THE RECIPE

  • Tanqueray 10 Gin - 35ml 

  • Asterley Original Aperitivo - 15ml

  • Aperol - 15ml 

  • SCHOFIELD'S Dry Vermouth -15ml

  • Asterley Bros Estate Sweet Vermouth - 15ml 

  • Citric Acid Solution (1:10 ratio) - 15ml 

  • Fee Brothers Cherry Bitters  - 1 dash 

  • Fee Brothers Rhubarb Bitters - 1 dash

 

To recreate this delightful Negroni variation, simply follow the instructions below:

  • Add the ingredients above to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and stir for 60 seconds until well-chilled and slightly diluted.

  • Pour into an ice-filled tumbler or old-fashioned glass.

  • Garnish with a slice of grapefruit and serve

  • If you want to prebatch your drinks to serve quickly later, just add another 10ml water to the ingredients above, to ‘pre-dilute’ the blend
