BAR BASSO, MILAN

BAR BASSO, MILAN
The Negroni Sbagliato is a drink that thrives on happy accidents. Born from a mistake at the legendary Bar Basso in Milan, its name translates to “mistaken Negroni.” Unlike its stronger cousin, which features gin, the Sbagliato swaps in sparkling wine—resulting in a lighter, effervescent take on the classic.
As March teases us with glimpses of spring, this Negroni has a refreshing, bubbly lift, making it perfect for those in-between days when the weather wavers. Lighter than the traditional Negroni but still rich in character, the Sbagliato suits this unpredictable season beautifully.

MIRKO STOCCHETTO
Bar Basso holds a special place in Milan’s drinking culture. Established in the 1940s, it became a hub for aperitivo lovers and remains an essential stop for cocktail enthusiasts. In the 1970s, while making a Negroni, Mirko Stocchetto mistakenly grabbed a bottle of prosecco instead of gin. Rather than discard the drink, he served it—and the Negroni Sbagliato was born.
Today, Bar Basso continues to be a cornerstone of Milan’s vibrant bar scene. A legendary hotspot for designers, especially during Milan Design Week, where it becomes a key gathering place for creatives to unwind over its iconic oversized Negroni Sbagliato glasses. Its timeless charm, classic cocktails, and rich history make it a symbol of effortless Italian style.

THE DRINK
This month, for something a little different, be sure to get in a bottle of prosecco. Take half a pouch (45ml) and top it up with 25ml of prosecco. This will mean you get four drinks out of two pouches this month rather than two! The result is a beautifully layered drink that’s effervescent yet full of depth.
As per usual, here at Asterley Bros, we've put our own spin on this beloved classic. Our version includes a splash of Crème de Framboise, Estate Sweet Vermouth and an aperitivo blend that’s made up of half Campari and half Asterley Bros Original. The result? A Sbagliato with extra fruitiness, smooth herbal notes, and a rounded, complex finish.
For an even lighter variation, swap out the prosecco for tonic water. This twist enhances the drink’s crispness while keeping the vibrant bitterness intact—perfect for a breezy March afternoon.
Whether you’re soaking up the first hints of sunshine or enjoying a cool evening indoors, the Negroni Sbagliato is the ideal companion. Mistakes have never tasted so good.
