Not every Old Fashioned needs bourbon. We've been making this version with Estate as the base spirit for a while now, and it holds up surprisingly well. Part of our Holiday Cocktails collection, three serves designed for warmer weather and longer days. This is the slower one of the batch, the kind of drink you sit with rather than rush through.
Estate's baking spice and dried fruit character gives the drink enough weight to feel like a proper Old Fashioned, even at a lower ABV. The bitters and orange peel do the rest.
Ingredients
- 60 ml Estate English Sweet Vermouth
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 dash orange bitters
- Orange peel and cherry (garnish)
Method
Step 1: Stir
Add Estate and both bitters to a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 20 seconds until properly chilled.
Step 2: Strain
Strain over a large ice sphere or cube in a rocks glass.
Step 3: Garnish
Express an orange peel over the surface, drop it in alongside a dark cherry.
Tasting Notes
Rich and aromatic, with Estate's cinnamon and clove warmth coming through alongside the bitters' spice. The orange peel lifts the nose while the cherry adds a subtle sweetness on the finish. Contemplative drinking at its best.
